I am quickly posting a comment below from Baby-Friendly USA (BFUSA) in response to discussion on Lactnet regarding this organization. I sit on the Board of Directors of BFUSA and just wanted to clear up a few things. Please feel free to contact myself or Trish MacEnroe at
[log in to unmask] if we can be of further help. We would love to hear from you.

Dear Ms. Rivera Todaro and other Lactnet readers,

Thank you for the opportunity to clarify the historic relationships of Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) initially got its start in the US through the fine work of several pioneers in the lactation field. The first assessment tools and pilot tests were conducted by Wellstart International. Healthy Children assisted in forming Baby-Friendly USA (BFUSA) as a not-for-profit corporation. UNICEF in the United States does not provide operating funds for BFHI, nor does any other governmental or non-governmental organization. Due to the limited resources available to BFUSA, the organization has been housed at the Healthy Children offices. We are extremely grateful for their generous support. BFUSA is very excited by the continuous opportunities to evolve and grow. We have taken several important steps. An Executive Director was hired in November 2009 and on September 1, 2011 we will open new independent headquarter offices in Albany NY. We have a diverse board of directors representing a variety of disciplines and professions who are working hard to help the organization rise to meet the new opportunities resulting from the high level focus on breastfeeding. As we form new partnerships with government and private foundations we will continue to grow in such a manner as to allow us to better serve the nation in improving hospital maternity care practices that support optimal infant nutrition and mother baby bonding. We look forward to working with you all as we continue on this journey.
