Hi Val, I guess I am late voting, but I'm with Jack (and Chole Fisher.) The
root is a reflex which makes baby "chase" the stimulus. If you tickle
bottom lip, you "chase down." Tuck your chin into your neck and try to open
your mouth wide. Try to swallow. It also collapses your airways. If baby
gets upper lip tickled, baby lifts up to chase the sensation, opening wider
because of the need to reach. If you tip your chin up, the nose backs away
(try cocking your chin up and see). So chin digs into breast, nose backs
away. This places jaw closure over lactiferous sinuses and allows open
airways at the nostrils and in the neck. There are neat pictures of this in
BESTFEEDING, and in Felicity Savage-King's book.
