On ACHOO syndrome (Column 8, yesterday), Helen Nicholson was excited to read of people pressing on the philtrum to stop sneezing "as it forms part of my PhD studies in dog physiotherapy". She says mammals have a sucking centre in the brain and pressure on the philtrum resets it. "When breastfeeding, baby mammals' top lips turn upwards to apply pressure to the philtrum, which resets the sucking centre so they can breathe, suck and swallow in a co-ordinated rhythm."
