"Babies today need more Vitamin D than they typically can get from sunlight"
DearFriends:
Is there evidence to support this? I've read that light-skinned babies
can get enough vitamin D with several 15-minute periods of exposure per week.
Vitamin D is synthesized in sunlight.

This is why I stated at the start of my post that I didn't want this to get into a debate about whether or not Vit. D supplementation for all is necessary. That was not the point of what I was saying! I was talking about better ways to word the position that the AAP is taking and the concerns about the effect of how it was being said. Whether or not the position itself is warranted is another subject entirely. We have the position in front of us at this point and we need to try to get it worded in ways that don't appear to place the blame on breastmilk. By lumping the question of the validity of the position with concerns about its wording and subsequent hidden message, I fear neither will change.
