As for working through the issues – to get rid of the ‘yuck’ factor have the nursing stop explaining it to parents as yuck.

I remember years ago when doing a hospital tour for my first – when someone brought up the idea of having their baby put on their chest immediately the nurse said “Do you really want the baby right away?! They are covered in gunk and blood, you really want us to clean the baby first before we hand it to you – right (while nodding ‘yes’) no one wants to touch the baby like THAT!” Let’s be honest, right after birth the family isn’t thinking about the baby being ‘dirty’ they just want to hold that new little one. After my first was born and put on my chest I never thought about was the baby ‘yucky’ – that’s what happens when they are handed to you immediately.

Just my opinion. But then that means you have to get the nurses over the yuck factor.
