Hi, all-

I have been asked to come to a hospital pharmacy meeting where an infectious
disease physician wants to address the rampant use of triple nipple ointment
in our community.

Unfortunately, when MilkWorks opened 10 years ago, I started using it for
open wounds on nipples. OBs and Midwives asked for the "recipe", and
ultimately it appeared on standard orders for breastfeeding mothers. : (
The ID folks are understandably upset with this overuse, and worry about
promoting resistant organisms to the antibiotic and antifungal. So they
want to hear the "rationale" for using it, and would really like to replace
it with something else.

I am not aware of any research looking at any prescription ointment on
nipples...is anyone else? It is my understanding the theory is taken from
wound literature, that open wounds are colonized quickly with both bacteria
and fungi which delay healing.

I have to say I am seriously looking at doing a study using medihoney...I
would love to start using that instead.

Thanks for any info you might have to share-
