Horizon is now owned by Dean Foods. "Dean Foods is the largest dairy product
company in the USA."

The history of organic standards is one in which the term "organic" is
continually under bombardment. The definition of organic is an important one--to
farmers, to consumers, and to food companies. Thus, it is of concern that small
companies in the organic business are being bought out. Will organic
standards change as time goes by? (the supplement industry is mostly now owned by
huge mult-national corporations--thus the heavy advertising and supposed
research-based evidence)

As important as organic is to me (I co-founded an organic food coop that is
still a thriving cooperative (almost 20 years now), I would never place organic
infant formula on a pedestal of infant formulas. Mammalian milks are species
specific foods. Thus, we introduce an element of risk when we make the
decision to circumvent nature--organic or not. How big a risk for the individual
infant is unknown but there is a risk. We are playing the formula game, when
we start saying that one infant formula is better than another. I strongly
believe in organic foods and organic infant formula is what I call marketing
magic. Breastfeeding advocates should not buy into this fallacy.
