Hi, my name is Michelle Elisburg and I am a third year medical student at
the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. This is my first
experience with one of these lists, so if I don't do it quite right,
sorry! A La Leche League mom told me about this list since I am doing a
project on the barriers to breastfeeding in a rural community. I am
working with the maternity care coordinator and the WIC counselors (who
are breastfeeding educators) to examine why women stop breastfeeding when
they do, how their resources are being utilized, etc. The community is
mostly indigent and very rural so I already know to expect some cultural
barriers. Not many women breastfeed and there is not a lot of support for
moms from grandmoms. Still, they have improved their breastfeeding rates
over the last few years and the health care workers are really committed
and have lots of resources. They want to know why it still doesn't work!
Or rather, how to best target and utilize the resources they do have.

There is a lactation consultant in a nearby city and some of the local
doctors and WIC people have started a Breastfeeding Task Force. I am
interested in what other people have done to promote breastfeeding in a
rural community. Thank you.

Michelle
