I generally warmed the milk in the syringe, keep the cap on the syringe. I
would use a clean styrofoam cup w/ hot water in it and place the syringe in
it briefly. A gavage feeding is not really a problem, becoz the milk is
warmed and given immediately by bolus feed to the infant. Continuous
feedings are more a concern becoz you do not want milk to be out for very
long. For example, if you put 12cc in a syringe and the baby gets 1cc/hr,
the milk is out for 12 hrs. I don't remember our protocol but one was
developed and I think syringes were changed every 4 hrs. However, another
concern was handling the syringes and tubing repeatedly. So every time you
changed the syringe the system was opened up (disconnecting the tubing) and
handled. It's the little bitty premies and the real sick ones that are at
the highest risk.
