Certainly, some sleepiness can be normal and like everything else,
it varies widely from baby to baby. I describe it to parents like
this: "Imagine you have been living in an increasingly smaller
room. After noticing the walls closing in on you over the past
weeks, now they are repeatedly squeezing you even tigher. Soon you
find yourself pushed or pulled through a tiny door and suddenly find
yourself on another planet! This must be a little like what the
new baby experiences. Up until now they had a reasonably calm
environment where all their needs were met automatically. Now they
have to "learn" how to keep their temperature even, breathe and eat
as well as coping with new sights and sounds. It wouldn;t be too
long before you say to yourself, 'I'm overwhelmed! I need a
break.'" The deep sleep many babies fall into after their brief
wide awake state may be a response to feeling overwhelmed with all
the new stuff they have to get used to. I think also, that K-care
and breastfeeding are a way for baby to feel a little like going
back where they came from. It helps them "regroup" so they can face
the world again.
