>Last night I watched a wonderful TV program about Rachael Carson and her
life. How her book Silent Spring was probably responsible for the
environmentalist movements of today. .. I felt there were many parallels to
not only the anti smoking lobby, but the anti formula marketing lobby we are
all a part of. (Jackie)

I saw this program too (made in 1993). Very powerful. It seems so
inconceivable now that the American Medical Asssociation condemned Rachel
Carson. She is the best example of using science to explain the facts,
calmly and clearly, in order to show the world the truth.
Actually, Prof Roger Short wrote this on the blurb for Breastfeeding
Matters: "Just as it took Rachel Carson's Silent Spring to alert us to the
widespread pollution of our environment, so we are indebted to Maureen
Minchin of having exposed the way that we have been beguiled by
pseudo-science into believing that Breastfeeding Doesn't Matter in this
modern age."
