I received a call from a mother today who told me her milk suddenly seems
to have decreased dramatically. Baby was born at 7lb 2 oz and weighed
10lbs 5 oz at 2 mon. Baby has breastfed very well from the start. About a
month ago the baby started to sleep 10 hours at night and feedings went to
5 min. every 3-4 hours during the day. Stools went from several daily to
one every third day and she described them as brown and seedy. At the 4
month visit the baby weighed only 10lbs 16 oz., an 11oz gain in 2 months.
The pediatrician could find nothing wrong except for the slow growth, so he
told her to formula feed after each breastfeed, which she did and the baby
took 4oz of formula after nursing only 5 minutes. Mother told me she had
trouble conceiving and took clomide and then was told she did not produce
pregestin and they injected her during the first trimester. She had the
same problem with her first baby and her milk went away at about the same
age and she had to switch to formula as the baby was not growing. She
wants to breastfeed and would like to know what she can do to bring her
milk supply back. She claims she no longer feels let down during feedings
like she did for the first few months. I told her I would ask the experts
on lactnet their opinions and call her tomorrow. So what would you all
suggest. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
