Wasn't there a study that reported that mothers are very accurate
remembering when their babies weaned?!

First born in 1977

Tandem nursed after his sister was born when he was 2 y 8 mo. old. Weaned
at 3 y 7 mo. It was my birthday, his dad was at the lab, we were at a close
friend's for dinner, he was under the table (not his usual mealtime location)
and I was miffed. Fast forward to 9 PM. Got a call from my dh to pick him up
(only one car) both fell asleep during the 20 minute trip. Dh forgot all
about us waiting in the parking lot, so I had to wake them up and go inside to
find him. When we got home toddler was still awake, and I told him that we
could nurse and then I was going to go to sleep with the little one and that he
could ask his Dad to read to him. He didn't fall asleep, later Dad gave him
a drink, read to him. He discovered that night he could fall asleep without
nursing and never asked to again! I wasn't ready for that at all! 3 y 7
months (No periods for 1st 14 months of bfg)

2nd 1980 When she as 2 y 8 mo. we'd moved to Japan in January and she was
still nursing every morning -- her favorite time. Had dropped afternoons
and evenings. Someone trying to be a good host arranged for her to join her
brother at the local Buddhist nursery school in June. I wasn't certain she
could handle it. She upped her nursing to include nursing as soon as we got
home from school - for about three weeks, and then dropped that. I assumed
she'd adjusted to school by then and was comfortable. She loved school and being
with other children so much that a few months later she had learned Japanese
and refused to speak to me in English! She started skipping two to three
days between nursing. In November my in-laws and one set of grandparents-in-law
came to visit. I accompanied them to Kyoto for three days and two nights.
Got back and she never asked to nurse again! Yikes. 3 years 7 months (no
periods for 1st 24 months of bfg )

3rd 1986 This was the fellow who, when he hurt himself, didn't need to
crawl into my arms. I had swooped him up when he was first crawling to comfort
him, but one day watched him. He cried a bit, didn't turn toward me, composed
himself and went on. So I continued watching him and it seems he had
discovered he could cope fine! That was a first for me. When he was about 3 yrs 5
months old we were sitting in an armchair; he was nursing at nap time and it
just felt strange to me. I said to him that it felt as though his mouth was
forgetting how to nurse, and that if he wanted to he could lay his head on my
breast and I could hold him. He thought about it a few minutes, looked up
at me, let go, laid his head on me and fell asleep! Never asked to again.
Instead I held him, and he'd fall asleep. Now, why did I say that to him?! (no
periods for 1st 17 months of bfg)

I have one telling story about him to share. When he was a little over 2 yo
I'd been to a bfg cf and had seen breast models made out of pantyhose (thanks,
Betty Crase). So I was making my first model one day while he was napping.
When he woke up and came out of the room I held up the 'breast' to show him
and his chin dropped down to his chest. He exclaimed, "Why did you take it
off?!!" (I didn't realize it was a "self portrait".) So later that day I told
his sister what he said and asked him why he was upset that I'd taken off my
breast. His reply, "Because then I'd have to lie down on the floor and
nurse without you."
