Thank you, Shaughn, for reminding all of us of how Mother Nature intended for
breastfeeding to happen. Suzanne Colson has been doing research (in the UK,
I believe) on "biological nurturing". She is discovering that the most natural
and easiest position for nursing is the mother in a semi-reclining or fully
reclining position. This makes perfect sense to me. I can't recall when I was
last at the zoo with my children in the Great Ape House watching mother
gorillas and chimps nursing their babies sitting bolt upright in a chair using a
nursing pillow!
If we are promoting s2s care, mothers are instinctively going to wiggle their
bodies into at least a semi-reclining position in order to feel comfortable. For
those who are comfortable on their sides, baby snuggles right up to mom's
body with his head under her armpit.
