I usually get the mailing for this conference, but have not received it
yet. I found this very interesting, as I wonder what BF presentations will
be! I realize outside speakers are also presenting (thank goodness, I hope),
but am concerned about some of the local staff presenters. I am an IBCLC
that works with WIC, so we have many high risk babies treated here (only
children's hospital in state). About 1 out of 10 have been given ANY BF info
when their babies are there.
I had a mom last week that had 5 wk old twins, had been using manual pump
7x/day, and was in tears because they told her since she couldn't pump enough
milk for them, they'd have to supplement with ABM. Thank goodness her WIC
appt (not even in my County!) was the next day & the program coordinator
called me about a low cost electric pump! One of the twins did not tolerate
ABM well, according to mom, and when I called for follow-up, one had died
(don't know which one).
I have seen quite a few moms (when child was over 6 mos) with babies with
cleft lip &/or palates, and I have yet to find one that they told them they
could not BF. They almost always supplement HM with human milk
fortifier--this has grown at an alarming rate recently. The one mom that was
very defensive about how much they supported BF told me that when her VERY
premature (bw=1# 8oz) was finally released (about 4.5 #), that she was only
allowed to feed at the breast once a day, and to very gradually increase, so
as not to stress the baby. Of course mom pumps like crazy, baby is fed with
bottle (they also don't know about cup feeding or SNS's!!!). I have an
unfortunate amount of stories like this. Any other LC's in the area had the
same experience, or is it just me?! I believe they are the only major
hospital in the city without an IBCLC on staff--so sad. :-(
Our beloved Kathy Dettwyler's son with Down's was treated here, but I
believe she told me they didn't really promote, nor prevent her from BF. Of
course, I'd like to see someone tell her she could NOT BF her son!!! ;-)
I guess I hope there is good info provided & they move FORWARD in
supporting BF!!! Thanks for letting me vent!
