Dear Lactnetters,
I just got this call today and will see Mom and babe tomorrow. Please read and give me any input (via private email as I am currently nomail). I would really appreciate your help!
Hx:
Baby girl born 4/30, weight: 7 lb 13 oz
                6/1 weight: 8 lbs
                6/4 weight: 8 lbs 3/4 oz
Has foul-smelling gas and *burnt orange stools* BUT has only had 5 (!) BMs since birth. Has had a *UTI since birth* and has been on antibiotics for one month (amoxicillin and something IM, but Mom cannot recall what it was). Mom is giving 1 cc water (from well) after meds to clean out syringe.
Babe feeds well both breasts 15-20 min/breast, every 1 hour during day and has slightly longer intervals at night. Supplementing with pumped EBM 5 oz/day. Six heavy wet diapers/day. Current measurements pending.
Born to 31yo Mom induced for gestational diabetes. Labor meds were stadol and an intrathecal. Baby hypoglycemic at birth and rec'd D10W two times. No other supplementation. Mom reports baby *looks healthy*. Primary care doc says *baby needs supplementing*, but gave no guidelines for how much/how often.
Questions:
1) Is this situation partly R/T the antibiotics?
2) Is there something metabolically *wrong* w/ baby? What kind of work-up, if any should be done?
3) Is a stool sample in order? Is the orange in the stool blood?
4) Your ideas?????????
Thank you so much!!!
