Re: the 9 month old who has stopped gaining weight. My daughter, who weighed
8 pounds at birth, weighed 17 pounds at a year. Now that was a child who
REALLY dropped through the percentiles. She was still almost exclusively
breastfed at 12 months, eating just a tiny amount of solids. She was bright,
active, met all the milestones (walked at 9 months) and was just fine. Today
she is 5'2" and very slender and fine-boned.

I would wonder, though, if this baby's weight gain has stalled because of
the mother's new pregnancy. If her milk supply has dropped very
significantly, and the baby was relying on that for the majority of his
caloric intake, that may be the issue. I think force-feeding a baby is
almost always a mistake - potentially setting up all kinds of future eating
problems. Frequent offering of a variety of calorie-dense foods is probably
a better strategy.

And about the breastfeeding causing contractions - I breastfed through three
pregnancies, and nursing almost always caused contractions. They seemed to
start earlier with each pregnancy, and could be surprisingly strong and last
for quite a long time. However, they didn't start premature labour at all -
in fact, I went to 42 weeks with two of those pregnancies.
