I would think keeping them from scarring over would involve *frequent*
expression for a few days as they heal.  Wouldn't the flow of milk keep them
open?  If direct nursing is too painful at first, then maybe skilled hand
expression several times an hour, even if someone does it for her at night.
Whatever it took to keep the milk flowing, flowing, flowing...
