In our group, Allaitement Québec, one of our members asked the other
day what AQ should reply if asked which would be better for a baby in
the case of the mom not being able to pump and give her own milk...to
have another person nurse their baby, or to give formula (I had
said...assume the mom needs emergency surgery that will be like maybe
14 hours long and won't have time to prepare milk ahead for her baby).
Which has more risks. I know that the WHO recommends another mom's
milk before formula (formula being 4th on the list) but do they
recommend pasteurized human milk or just human milk?

I realize that there are hypothetical risks of HIV transmission and
others...

I said to our coordinator that in my humble opinion, AQ should NOT
take any position for or against anything, but should rather inform of
the risks of BOTH choices, plus give the information of what the WHO
recommends and leave it up to the mom to decide, perhaps with an
add-on that "whenever possible, your OWN milk is what is best for your
baby".

AQ has decided that this will be what they say to moms if this ever
comes up (it hasn't so far...) and they are looking for websites that
give the risks of sharing nurslings so to speak. I know Cindy has a
site on the risks of sharing pumps; that could be a good one...and
formula risks are fairly well-known but are there any really good ones
that give out lots of info on percent chance of getting ill with XYZ
if formula is given? I've forwarded the "Just One Bottle" essay to
start with...

Anyhow...thanks in advance for all your favourite links on this subject!!!
