<If a baby is experiencing lower abdominal pain, such as colic, they
will
bring up their knees when crying and clench their fists.
If a baby is experiencing upper abdominal and chest pain, such as
Reflux/GERD, they will arch and stiffen their bodies when they cry.>

Dear Ann,

Unfortunately, those general guidelines often will be misleading.

Babies tend to keep their trunks flexed (that is how the muscles their
muscles are trained to maintain in the uterus) and so they often revert
to the "fetal position" when they are upset (crying from stomach pain,
heel prick, loud noise, etc).

Likewise, they may have bursts of extensor tone when they are upset
(?Moro reflex being triggered). That is why Susan Orenstein from
Pittsburgh noted that many babies who have episodes of body extension
during feedings are NORMAL (without GERD).

Harvey
