Hello everyone

My name is Rachel. I’m an ABA counsellor and brand new registered
nurse. I hope to do my midwife training in the next couple of years and
become a lactation consultant as soon as humanly possible. I have 2
children Lily 10 yo and Ben 7yo. I am passionate about supporting
families right from the get-go and believe that supporting a mother in
feeding her baby is the very first step in building a healthy family as
well as a healthy child.

I am divorced from my children’s father and have been repartnered for a
few years but this is our first year of living together as a family. It
is also my first year of fulltime work since before my children were
born. 2007 is set to be a year of a great deal of personal growth!

The hospital I work at is very behind the times, does not appreciate
their wonderful midwives and the thought of there even being a need for
a Lactation Consultant just makes many staff laugh. As a result a lot
of postnatal mums seem to leave hospital with nipple shields or
expressing like crazy for no real reason, comp feeding with
ABM or EBM or just not breastfeeding at all. I would truly love to
address this situation and get more lactation education and information
to the HPs of our town. I would love for my hospital to be Baby Friendly
one day.

At the moment I am a very scared and awestricken new graduate looking
for professional allies and hoping that lactnet will help to keep me on
track.

Any suggestions about achieving my goals would be most gratefully
received!

Rachel Haley
