This is an extrememly important case that those in the health care
profession--particularly those of us in the USA, must become thoroughly educated about
so that we can educate our parents. This case is about premie who got powdered
infant formula through a baby gift pack given to the parents at the hospital.
I posted the following a few weeks ago and no one commented on it. But it
is a heads up for everyone in our international community--powdered infant
formula is not a sterile product. Infants are at risk around the world--including
those infants living in developed nations. Good medical care, clean water,
cannot undue the damage done by a substance that is contaminated with
enterobacter sakazakii and/or samonella; and given to infants who have compromised
immune systems. And all health care professionals should know that any premie or
full term newborn not fed human milk is an infant with a compromised immune
system.
post a few weeks ago:
"The European Food Safety Agency is recommending that mothers should use
liquid infant formula for the first four weeks of life if babies are not
breastfed. Powdered infant formula is not a sterile product and can contain a
bacteria--salmonella and enterobacter sakazakii--that can cause illness and death.
Labels on infant formula maybe changed to reflect this concern.

Where is the USA on this issue? "

Valerie W. McClain, a breastfeeding advocate who dearly wishes that the
every aspect of the WHO Code would be followed in the USA. Instead, damage is
done and law suits will be the end result of parents not being fully informed of
the dangers of infant formula by health care professionals.
