This is stated quite clearly on the AAFP position paper page 2 under the
title of "Health Effects". It can be downloaded at:

Moreover, antedotally when I visited the San Jose Milk bank, the director
related a case study in which a 4 year old with severe seizures was so
medicated she was not very responsive and she was constantly in the hospital
with pneumonia. With as little of 4 oz of "banked" milk they were able to
significantly reduce her seizure meds and she remained infection free. When
this was withdrawn she was back in the hospital again.

Also, even though 5 oz sounds like a little amount it is 2 feedings for a
newborn. Ask if you have the choice of fast food for every meal or if you
could feed twice a day a healthy meal which would you choose. Another way to
perceive this is: she is providing 10-20% of this infants food supply.
Given a little time, more support and less stress she may even be able to
provide 30-40%. Good luck. Christine Betzold NP IBCLC MSN
