Hi
I've just seen for the first time a three days old baby girl that doesn't
want to latch on,she was born at home after a two hours labour and needed
some oxigen to sstart breathing well, thogh she was never cianotic. she
needed some mouth/nose aspiration too.She latched on the breast for two
times but also then the latch was rather superficial and she didn't ever
open the mouth well. Mother has been pumping and giving her colostrum with
a syringe (with difficoulty). When I saw the baby she didn't look
dehidrated. Her pops were turning yellow and her urine was clear;her
reflexes were OK. The pediatrician saw her three hours after the birth and
he didn't find any problem. She has lost 10% of her birth weight.
When I touch the baby's lips or face, she doesn't root or search but she
clenches her mouth tight. Sometimes when she is alone she shows some
rooting but when the mother puts her on the breast she tends to close her
mouth and doesn't actively suck. She sucks superficially and then afer
about ten sucks she falls asleep.During the past nights she has been
crying a lot but still refusing to latch. Mother hasn't ever used any
artificial nipple and baby is having lots of skin to skin contact. We tried
with a foley cup and mom found it easier than syringe.
Could be an oral aversion?Could it be a pathological
tension of jaws?
What can you suggest me?
