Ok, to clarify some things about my cup feeding
question, sorry, I am new at posting questions:

The mom wants to exclusively breastfeed and in fact
infant is only getting breastmilk. Mom does not really want the baby to get
a bottle and so I went with her to the nurse who was caring for the infant.
Together we asked the nurse if it is possible the mom use a supplemental
nurser for the feedings on the breast. (again the baby only gets expressed
milk). Of course she could not give any reason that this could not be done
so she agreed. Earlier the mom had asked about the same thing and that same
nurse told her that the milk would come too fast through the supplemental
nurser so she could not, she could not say that in front of me. The mom and
I talked afterward, she asked me to get some information together for her
because she realized that she was not going to get them to give in or change
their minds about certain feeding issues without some back-up. This is
classic for both the Level II staff and the Neo. Obviously we as the LC's
here have A LOT of work ahead of us to bring everyone around. Currently our
hospital administration, OB docs, L/D staff and many of the Mother/Baby
staff are very supportive of our very new Lactation Consultant Program, The
Level II nurses and the Neo and 97% of the Peds are our worst obstacles.
The things that they believe and tell patients will make your skin crawl
sometimes. Also these same opposers don't take kindly to anyone that thinks
they have a better plan. Gently we are posting accurate, referenced info as
FYI's to the staff, and providers. We also are collecting info to give moms
to empower them to ask the leading questions to the Level II, Neo and Peds
since coming from us (LC) puts these professionals on the defensive and
would just make matters worse. I tell moms to ask "Why , Or what is the
reason for this plan of care", when an answer makes sense or is validated
then ok, otherwise the moms have the information to ask further questions
and hopefully over time things will improve for all of the patients.
