Some months ago I wrote in (on behalf of a colleague) regarding a recently post-partum mom that was exhibiting severe visual disturbances. Her OB worked her up; found nothing and sent her to an Opthomologist. He told her it was a related to lactation and she had to wean to regain her normal vision. He said he had seen this only a few times in his career but that was that. The OB has a LC in his office and she didn't think this sounded right. I spoke w/ an ednocrinologist & pathologist (both patients of mine) and they agreed that this just sounded strange. I even talked to one of our brilliant Neonatologist (who quickly said she has MS). At the urging of the LC (from the OB office) the mom was sent to a neurologist for a work up. The neurologist dx'd her w/ MS, told her to keep on breastfeeding. I believe the OB did send a copy of the report to the eye doc but I'd have to ck. on that. I don't know what meds she is on but just wanted to let you all know how this
shaked out. Cudos to Mary Ellen Rhodes RN, IBCLC and her employer (The OB).
