This is in response to Friday's posting regarding the DHA presentations.
Our lactation committee attended last winter. We too felt it was important
to know what was being presented. Our perspective was to bring all the
breastfeeding facts as they compare to the information being presented. Of
course, the room was full of LCs only so certainly we were preaching to the
choir. We all came "armed" to debunk any idea that the formula was somehow
equal or superior to breastmilk. What we went away with a more clear
understanding of the insidiousness of the marketing strategies of the
formula companies. I currently am researching the Vendor Policies and
Procedures to find a loophole that will allow our committee to have these
presentations blocked from our facilities. I was recently disallowed
reimbursement by Medela for airfare to a lactation related conference. I
only feel it appropriate to use this P and P to do the same with Ross and
Mead Johnson. They are planning a two session conference for WBW with a
supposed emphasis on "Catching onto Latch On". This will last only one of
the 4 hours, with a formula presentation taking up the remainder of this
conference...and food to follow of course. The invitation will be extended
to all L & D, Post-partum, and NICU staff. I would enjoy your postings and
support as we go to battle next week with the planning committee.

Thank you,
