Hi, Susan, and welcome -

Don't have trepidation about posting here, or being "behind the times" -
you're *here*, reading posts from BFing supporters all over the world,
right? So that puts you *way* ahead of all the "more up-to-date" wise-guys
who never bother to read a thing about breastfeeding once they've got their
"initials"!

Anyway, about your question re: sterilizing pump parts: Most hospitals in
the US just purchase and dispense individual pump "kits" - all the parts
that are used by the individual that are not part of the pump itself. In the
hospitals I'm familiar with, they are charged to the pt's insurance or
Medicaid accounts. That way, every patient has her own pump "kit", and takes
it home with her when she goes. If she needs to pump after discharge, she
can either rent a medical-grade pump & continue using her pump parts (except
in our stubborn local hospital, where the hospital insists on using "the
other brand" of pump, incompatible with the pumps available locally for rent
or sale and with the other hospitals in our area - but that's another
story!) with the rental pump, or purchase a pump that is compatible with the
set-up she already has. Or if all she needs is a manual pump for occasional
use, the pump kit she got in hospital can be used as an efficient manual
pump. (Or she can use it as a sandbox toy, or give it to her sister-in-law,
or whatever...) She's essentially "bought" it, it's hers for her use only.

And under normal conditions, it doesn't need sterilization between uses,
since she's the only one using it - good soapy water & air-drying does the
job just fine. The pump itself, of course, doesn't need sterilizing, just
normal "wiping down" between pts, no big deal.

Tepid water only? Gross!

Cathy
