Dear Friends:
I did a consultation today; the grandmother was there and part of the
action. She didn't breastfeed, but wouldn't discourage her daughter. She did
suggest her daughter get some expert help. This was good.
We were all chatting. The grandmother talked about how some of her
breastfed nephews, nieces, and grandchildren had various allergies, asthma, RSV and
other illnesses. So to her, it didn't matter how a baby was fed. One of the
factors that led her to this belief was the breastfeeding promotion over the
years that gave her the feeling that breastfeeding makes healthy children.
Period. Breastfed kids won't get sick.
I explained to her about populations and how breastfeeding is like
wearing a seatbelt, no guarantee of perfect health, but worth the effort.
This new ad campaign, (and I pray that it is released soon), with its
slant on the risks of not breastfeeding will help dispel this notion of human
milk as magic fairy dust.........I hope!
    warmly,
