"M" HAS MILK. And lots of it.
back up with me for a second:
About 18 mos ago, we'd been through a tough spot with another friend of
ours....tongue tie not dx'ed until day eight (missed by the usually vv
thorough mw and ped), by day eight, when she called me in tears, i
arrived to find a baby in bad shape who needed to be fed *right then*.
"M" was there, she remembers it well.
When she called me on Thursday am, 60h pp, she was concerned. She
could see her baby moving that direction. I had a great conversation
with Anne Grider (of this list and my locale) who reminded me that it's
not uncommon for that to happen going into day three and that we
wouldn't know until we knew.....iow, we couldn't jump to conclusions
until we knew that her milk was either coming, or not coming in that
night (9:30 pm would be 72h). Baby was nursing frequently
frequently......getting a little sleepy and lethargic, but still coming
around to nurse. Mom could feel fullness in her breasts increasing.
As an interesting sidebar, the baby had a huge meconium stool at
birth....literally the moment he was born. mw said it was a volume
she'd never seen before for one stool.
so the first day:
~ one diaper around 22h......10 min before it happened, the nurse wanted
to give the baby pedialyte. pedialyte? we he urinated on the nurse,
she laughed and said, 'well, i won't mention the pedialyte again today".
no stool since birth.
second day:
2 wets, no stool.
third day:
2 wets, no stool.......then at the 'end' of the third day, around 70 h
pp, I get a call while putting my kids to bed. an exhuberant voice
exclaims "there's fluid coming from my breasts!!!" we indulge in a
little screamfest. she was nursing the baby when our other friend
arrived at her house around 7:30 pm. the baby was just coming off the
breast. other friends says, uh, look at your nipple. "M" says,
"what is it???" (though she knew).
fourth day:
scheduled ped visit to just check things out. got the call. just as
baby peed on cue for the nurse on day one, he stooled on cue for the ped
as ped was removing his diaper. it was mostly a breastmilk stool.
wow. shock the sh*t out of me.
ped (who's had three hb's) was v happy with baby's weight and all other
indicators of baby's status.
