Hi Diane, and All: It's standard practice in my area hospitals to give
Depo to teen moms within 48 hours after delivery. The rationale is these
moms will not abstain from intercourse before the 6 week check-up and are
too irresponsible to use another method of birth control before then. So,
the shot they get. Actually, I didn't encounter too many problems with low
milk supply in this population of mothers. Most did just fine. Because I
was doing weekly and biweekly home visits with them, it was also easier for
them to remember to go back every 3 months and get another Depo shot with
me constantly reminding them.
To comment further on interruptions and cell phones. Just as I was leaving
work the other day, a new dad called me from the Birth Center - his wife
needed help with latch-on, could I come down and help? When I got down to
their room just a minute or 2 later, both parents were each on a cell phone
and the baby lay naked on a turned-off warmer, looking around. The mom
barely interrupted her phone conversation to greet me. At this point her
nurse came back in with a handful of hot packs. I told her that I was
there at the parents' request to help with brstfdg. Oh, no, the baby is
too cold! He needs to be wrapped and stuffed with hot packs! I turned to
the mother and probably not too politely her she needed to get off the
phone NOW because her baby needed to be warmed. Fortunately, the nurse
backed off and promptly left the room. We did get the baby skin-to-skin
and toasty warm but he did not nurse right then. I'm still having trouble
with this scenario - we have a cold baby (45 minutes old) laying naked on a
warmer that isn't even turned on!!! while both parents sit on cell phones!
After they had requested brstfdg help! Go figure...
