The problem with not weighing a baby until he/she is six weeks old is that
we can potentially miss a bunch of problems that are more easily corrected
in the early days. If poor weight gain is not caught until 6 weeks of age or
later a mom's milk supply has usually down regulated and the baby may have a
weakened suck. At this late date, a mom may or may not be able to get an
abundant milk supply going and the interventions needed are so much greater
than if we catch the problem in the first week. And many women give up at
this time when breastfeeding is not going well. I also find that weight
checks in week two reassure mothers and they lose the desire to supplement
with formula.
