Dear Carol and Lactfolks,

You can get an idea of the sessions from the LLLI website, and there are
tapes of the sessions available, too. The Global Interactive Workshops (GIW)
are continuing to accept input online.

I absolutely loved hearing many of my "lactation heroes" (including Dr.
Jack!). The GIW workshop on breastfeeding in emergency situations
(earthquake, war, hurricanes, etc.), though, brought up issues we may not be
thinking about every day. Part of our education efforts (this years' World
BF Week theme!) needs to include any organization involved in emergency
relief efforts, so their ignorance of breastfeeding and its importance
doesn't lead to further tragedy after a disaster. The GIW panel had handouts
to help in working with relief organizations, as well as lots of experience
dealing with these groups to try to institute the relief team BF policy
before an emergency occurs.

Of course, formula companies are doing their usual disruptive best. Dr.
Maria Jesus Largaespada mentioned that "formula companies arrive a lot faster
than relief organizations." She also mentioned a recent New York Times
article, about drug company donations, which reported (near the end of the
article) that a formula company refused to donate baby food unless its
formula was also accepted. If anyone noticed this article, I'd appreciate
hearing which issue it was in.

I was lucky enough to be at the table discussing relactation with Dr.
Largaespada. Anyone who'd like more info about this session, feel free to
e-mail me.
