I've always adhered strictly to item 23, as referenced earlier....In my
hospital based practice, I must have a physician order to work with
outpatients, inpatients have a standing order. I dictate a consultation
report which is transcribed for the medical record, one is sent to the
baby's HCP, one comes to me for my records. I know our physicians expect a
report of some kind. I believe this has been a tremendous educational
opportunity. The physician reads the note, his medical/office assistant may
read the note, all having the opportunity to learn something more about
breastfeeding, as well as building a reputation with the local practices
that brings more moms/babes in for help. I see this as collaborative, an
adjunct to baby's routine well-baby care. I know my situation is different
from those in private practice, the physicians in our area are more likely
to support and value a service that they know something about- and that
influences a woman's decision to access that service.
