A local equipment company has been selling breastpumps like crazy. There is
this new fad in my community to just pump and give the breastmilk by bottle.
I
know I read or learned somewhere that this is not a good practice, but I
cannot find any literature to support me. I feel that breastpumps rented or
sold
should only be done once reason has been explored as to its use. Am I wrong?
This company is adjunct to our hospital and originally there was a verbal
agreement that I would be the only one issuing pumps, but they have found a
gold mine
in selling pumps. I need something to back me up. Our breastfeeding rates
are
in the basement!!!!!! HELP

No, Debbi, you are *not* wrong. Focusing on the product (the milk) seems to
have totally ignored the *process*, in the interests of making a profit.
How about searching the Lactnet Archives for skin-to-skin and oxytocin?
You could also search Medline, Pubmed, or CINAHL. The amount of
skin-to-skin contact that mother and baby (or care-giver and baby) get while
bottle-feeding (even if the bottle contains EBM) is miniscule. Just an itty
bit of the skin at the back of the baby's neck against the tiny area of the
adult's wrist - that is, if the adult isn't wearing long sleeves and warm
clothes.
This practice also changes what should be a relaxing time together, with
Mum and baby drowsy with hormones, into *work*.
