One thing that seems hard to discern from the info in our lactation books is
how many of these calories are  derived from protein and how many from fat or
lactose.  Protein is not a ready source of calories as it must be digested to
provide them.  Colostrum is mostly protein and has lower fat content of
mature milk.   Colostrum is high in protein due to all the immunoglobulins,
lactofeerin, and alpha-lacalbumin.  It's also high in 'ash' sodium,
potassium, chloride.

Lawrence's 4th ed. says "the higher protein, lower fat, lactose solution is
rich in immunoglobulins, esp. sIgA.

The chart on p. 97 shows on day 1 that lactose ranges form 4.07 + or- 0.98
grams/dl.  Anyone care to figure out what this translates into calories.  I'm
too tired to think it out right now.

So although I'd like to agree that colstrum provides many more calories than
D5W I wish that the books would somehow break down where the calories are
coming from.
