YIKES!!! So many spelling errors in my last post - the price for trying to write too much, too quickly.  My apologies.

I want to clarify that I believe there is value in using measurements such as weight change to assess a newborn's feeding.  Inadequate production or transfer needs to be identified and corrected.    My issue is with how we use the numbers.

I do not expect to affect IV use with women in labour, as there are medical reasons, but we need to understand factors that affect neonatal weight loss.  The effect of maternal fluids is probably not long lasting.  Any fluid shift would likely be in the first few days, and it is a correction not pathology.  Continued weight loss or poor gain is not likely due to maternal fluids.

A few more thoughts,
Joy
