I know I am a little slow to write on this but I would like to hear what
others thought.
The article was in the Wed., Jan. 2, Boston Globe in the City & Region
section.
The title was: Concerns raised over rising birthweights in US. This was
prompted by the New Year's baby that weighed 8 pounds 1 ounce. My first
thoughts were; now that we have women eating healthy diets, getting good
prenatal care and stopped smoking, we make them feel bad that they produce
larger babies?!
The article was not that well written but they quoted an author and scientist
from San Diego, Tom Samaras: 'We're getting too big and using up too many
resources. We need to reevaluate this obsession with size.'
Has anyone heard of him and has he published in medical journals?
The other part of this article that makes me concerned on the public's
response was a quote from a maternal fetal medicine specialist at Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center. She said 'Later in life, exceptionally large
babies may be at a higher risk for obesity and myriad obesity-related woes.'

Now there was no mention on how formula feed babies are at higher risk of
obesity in later life. The article gives the impression that if you have a
large baby that this will lead to a higher risk of obesity in later life.
I plan to try and reach this person at Beth Israel and get her resources but
I would love to hear what others think.
