I am working with a mom of a full-term 7 day old baby (7#12oz.). Baby is
very lethargic and continues to be NPO. On day 5 mom complained of
extreme pain due to several small blisters on her nipples. Baby has
never been put to breast. Blisters appear as water blisters and we sent
a swab to be cultured. Results were positive for Herpes Simplex Virus.
Mom unaware of ever having herpes. The lab cultured mom's milk which
detected the bacteria listeria. I have never encountered either of these
situations when dealing with a neonate. Could the baby have contracted
listeria in utero? This info came back on Friday close to 5:00 and I
was not able to discuss personally with the neonatologist. I am worried
about the baby as is the neonatologist but as far as I know no treatment
as been started. Any advise???? I am new to Lactnet and have searched
the archives to no avail. Thank you very much for any help or direction
you can provide.
