Dear Lactnetters,

It has been very distressing to me to hear that the National Advertising

Campaign in the USA has been re-vamped/stiffled. I have come up with an
idea
that I think could make a difference. It makes me smile at the
possibilities
so I thought I would share it with the larger group.

I think mom's know what breastfeeding means more than the AAP. I am a La

Leche League Leader. Our next series meeting that is coming up is on
the "Benefits Of Breastfeeding". I plan to inform the mom's about the
changes in the National Breastfeeding Campaign. (Using Katie Allison
Granju's
article at www.hipmama.com/node/view/588 as a general outline.) LLL
focuses
on the benefits of breastfeeding but I will talk to them about what a
difference in language can make. I plan on providing many 11"X14"
poster
board & art supplies so that they can make their own adverstising
campaign.
Even if they make a "benefits" poster- it will still be their own and
they

will have been informed of the controversy. Some will complete it in
groups
there & others will take it home to put more thought/work into it. Once
they
are done I plan on displaying the posters at our local library, college
and
hospitals. I plan on contacting newspapers & tv stations to highlight
the
censorship of the Nat. Ad Campaign & how local mom's have created their
own.
I plan on getting permission from each of the mom's so that the posters
can
be reproduced if necessary for publicity.

So- what about the rest of you? Will you join me and create your own
local
art show? Are you an IBCLC in a hospital or WIC clinic who is willing
to
display such artwork? Are you a fellow La Leche League Leader who can
have
your group do a similar project? Are you willing to publicize it to
papers,
TV & LLL area newletters? Do any of you have websites who would be
willing
to post examples if I can get them scanned? I am thinking of indoor

displays (Chicago is freezing now!) These could also be put in windows
or
put on sticks for outdoor protests (for those of you in warmer
climates.)For
those of us who also teach breastfeeding classes- we can put such
posters up
for the pregnant mom's to see.

Can we use this opportunity to work together? Some of us can help make
the
posters- other's can help display them. For those of us outside of the
US-
Will you join us in promoting breastfeeding through this poster idea?
Can we
turn the National Campaign into an international one?
I think we have a lot going for us- we all work with moms with whom
breastfeeding has been a lifechanging experience. Let's give them the
opportunity to use their creativity & make the advertising campaign
their own.

Please e-mail me privately if you would like more information or would
be
willing to assist in this grassroot project.
