When I worked at Women Infants and Children (WIC) Overseas at Aviano Air Base from 2002-2011 we advised timing the introduction of solids (for preterm babies) on the infants' developmental milestones and cues of readiness.  In our location and population of healthy military families the premature babies tend to be 1-1.5 months premature with no lasting medical or developmental sequelae. We did, however coordinate our advice with the pediatricians' recommendations and that of early intervention services based on any medical and/or deveopmental issues, especially in the rarer cases when the baby had been born much more prematurely.

Hope that helps,
Jenny
