Leah Shea has kindly pointed out to me that in my earlier post I implied
that just by looking at tube-fed preemies, Lucas et al. had eliminated
socioeconomic bias (as well as the effects of skin-to-skin contact
etc). Careless of me. Of course that wouldn't do it, in and of
itself. Does anyone have that actual study handy? Did the investigators
enroll families in the study and then randomly assign the babies to formula
vs. mother's milk feedings? Cunningham 1995 (in _Biocultural
Perspectives_) says the effect "was independent of the maternal choice to
give milk" which sounds as if the mothers did make the decision. Did the
researchers use the multivariate analysis programs that were becoming
increasingly available at that time, and which help to tease out the
relationships between different factors?
