Alice Martino raised some good points, sensitively. The decision whether to prepare for a credential, or to remain as an experienced breastfeeding counsellor, i.e. in the special relationship as a peer to the mothers who seek support, is one which individual LLLI or NMAA counsellors will make in different ways. Each choice will be right for that woman.
I think it is important to realise that the two roles - IBCLC and breastfeeding counsellor - are *complementary*, and a mother may use one or both, from time to time, depending on her needs. We're all there, when all's said and done, to assist and support the mother in her breastfeeding. As Alice said, "It would be different if there weren't truly excellent IBCLCs and supportive MDs" in her local area, where obviously LLLI Leaders and professionals are cooperating to do just that.
     Cheers,
         Virginia
