Katherine:

I saw something like this about a week ago. Baby had similar trouble
latching and achieving more than one suckle before losing the latch. It
looked like a duplicate, but soft extra gum line inside the real gum line.

But buried in there was a noticeable frenulum. It did not extend to the gum
or the tip of the tongue, but there was a distinctive groove midline on the
tongue from frenulum forward, up around the tip and as far back on the top
surface as I could see. This did not seem to affect baby's ability to
extend the tongue well beyond the lips - but clearly he could not form a
good seal or maintain a latch.

One of our Neos took a look when baby was in the nursery & said he thought
the extra "gum-like" tissue was probably swollen salivary glands. No
inflammation noted. No evidence that they caused baby discomfort. But he
could not feed at breast. The Neo also said nothing would be done about the
glands during this PP stay in the hospital. I urged mom to ask baby's Pedi
about baby's latch difficulties at her 2-day post d/c appt. We LCs have no
option or oppty for post-d/c followup.

However, on further inspection, she has extra tissue
