Hi Everyone:

I rarely post, but I have permission from mom to find out more about this question. Baby is 6 weeks, strong family history of allergies and gluten intolerance, stooling 10-15X daily, bright yellow stools. Ped ran a reducing substance test which came back 4+(highest postive) and consulted with immunologist. Mom told baby had carbohydrate malabsorption and immediately needed to be put on hypoallergenic formula.

I looked through archives and found some resources and a study. Basically saying that almost 1/2 of babies will test positive.

Also I couldn't find any references that states that hypoallergenic formula would improve or be better than breastfeeding. And I don't understand what carbohydrate malabsorption is? Is it a symptom or an actual disease process?

The immunologist won't see the mom or baby for further testing until baby has been off breastmilk and on this formula for a bit. Mom is now eating a "caveman" type diet to try to figure out if allergies are playing a part.

I appreciate any help, resources, or direction. I admit I know nothing about this other than what I have read on the internet in the past 12 hours!

Thanks,
Barb Cavanaugh RN, BSN, Private practice IBCLC,Homebirth Midwife, and finally, mom to 5!
