My comments on The Happiest Baby on the Block have started an interesting
discussion on supporting mothers who choose to combine bottles with
breastfeeding. I wanted to clarify the problem I had with the book's advice
on bottles.

Page 176 says, "Try not to offer your baby a bottle until she's two weeks
old and the feeding is going really well. Then offer her a bottle every day
or two." My problem with this passage is that there's no explanation of why
bottles have to be introduced every day or two; I would have appreciated
qualification of "if you plan to combine bottles and breastfeeding" and
information about the potential pros and cons of daily bottles.

I don't think that either extreme -- "you must give bottles to baby every
day or two" or "never introduce a bottle or your breastfeeding relationship
will be destroyed" -- is supportive of the situations and goals that
different mothers have.

Thanks, Dr. Karp, for being open to new information on how the book's
breastfeeding advice comes off. I look forward to seeing future editions of
the book. On a personal note, your information on the fourth trimester was
valuable to me with my third child ... who is tired of being with daddy, so
this email must end. :-)
