What we need to remember here is that press releases don't give medical
details - only things they think we will understand. I just talked to
some people who gave me some clarification about treatment of very
fragile premies.

Now, the babies have been NPO - nothing by mouth - because they are so
fragile. The news reports make it appear that when they DO start
receiving something by mouth, it is mother's expressed milk. If a baby
cannot tolerate by mouth feeding, or develops an infection, the baby
will be taken back to NPO status - nothing by mouth.

So it would appear that the hospital is withdrawing breastmilk, not to
make it sound like the milk caused the infection, but because the baby
cannot tolerate feeding by mouth until he/she gets stronger again. I
think it's amazing that the mom is pumping and the milk is being given
to her little ones as they are able.
