Phyllis: This is certainly a challenge for all of you! The first thing
you need to do is get an order for Occupational Therapy - the OT can help
this mom with adaptive equipment, etc. to facillitate breastfeeding. I
also would focus more on actually nursing the baby rather than pumping as
nursing is much less tiring and stressful for the mom. Tons of skin-to-
skin would help here, as it could help mom's muscles to relax.
It has been mentioned on Lactnet before and is certainly worth repeating.
www.throughthelooking glass.com is a very informative site on devices, etc.
designed to make parenting easier for parents with disabilities.
I learned so much when I sat in on my doctorally-prepared OT daughter's
(have to shamelessy brag again) class on Parents with Disabilities last
year at Washington University St. Louis.
You also may want to involve Social Services before mom's discharge from
the hospital, so that they can do a home assessment and hook this family up
with resources if needed. Does the mom have help at home, for example?
Keep us posted as to what interventions are working for this mother.
