My understanding is that the "new" Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta
growth charts are the "old" charts that have been statistically manipulated
to represent what the CDC thinks *healthy* heights and especially weights
are at each age. That is to say, rather than representing "this is how kids
are actually growing in the US" they will be "this is how kids SHOULD be
growing in the US". Basically, they have lowered the weights across all
ages, as kids in the US are too fat and that leads to health problems in
later life. So, now lots more kids will be seen as overweight and therefore
(perhaps) something will be done to curb their intake or increase their
activity level.

These are in NO WAY comparable to the new WHO growth charts that are not due
out until 2003, which are based on huge samples of children from quite a few
countries around the world, all of whom were fed according to WHo infant
feeding recommendations, which include exclusive breastfeeding for 4-6
months, followed by breastfeeding up to age two or beyond, and safe and
nutritionally adequate complementary foods. I recommend everyone hold out
for the WHO charts in 2003.
