Dear Lisa,
I wanted to stay out of this but your post put my thoughts in words. I have
to say I am less than encouraged to even post on lactnet anymore. After
reading some of the posts not just Morgans I can't believe folks think nurses
work for the paycheck....in any field, let alone the NICU. What about this
sterotyping of the lack of kangaroo care in the "west" (almost none) how do
you know this to be true? How can someone make a blanket comment like
this. Every hospital that has a level III NICU that I personally know of is very
familiar with kanagroo care. Also, this statement

she *is* right in her view that not all an=
d every one of NICU's and their staff are the best possible=A0 based on sci=
entific evidence. Many a routine in NICU's is not evidence based to the hig=
hest standards; not every pediatrician is knowledgeable in infant feeding, =
let alone breastfeeding, almost none (in Western societies) are knowledgeab=
le in Kangaroo Mother Care as the evidence based proven best care for premi=
es. And then you can do your very best and a bit more and work your butt of=
f, if routines and protocols do not these criteria NICU is no good enough.

I'm sorry to dissapoint some of you lactnetters but NO ONE IS PERFECT, but
when a person becomes a neonatologist, I believe they do the very best job
they humanly can. Why? Because it is a difficult job to say the least and
these wonderful men and women put their families, (many times) on the "back
burner" to stay one more hour, one more day as they try their best at
whatever they are doing to save these babies. This is not a job one does for
money, their are other jobs that are less stressful and do not require such
emotional energy as this particular calling.

Evidenced based to the highest standard? Some are. Some are not.
Not every pediatrician is as knowlegable as you in infant feeding? Let alone
breastfeeding? Maybe, maybe not. The neonatologists are keeping the
babies alive in the hopes that they can go home and breastfeed. I have had
my own disputes with a nurse or physician or two, but don't put everyone into
one lump pot. This is not only wrong, but it isn't always the case.

I am stunned at the lack of support we are giving each other. The blanket
statments about institutions and men and women of whom you know nothing
about.
We may lack in some areas, as you may, but I would rather be on the side of
encouragement, seeing progress being made, exchange of ideas, being
teachable and repectfull of our brothers and sisters who fight everyday, night
and day and stop pointing fingers. " Remove the log from your own eye, before
you try to remove the twig from your brothers." (poorly quoted biblical
principal)

With a saddened heart,
robin
